How to Overcome Fear of Flying as a Flight Attendant

A cabin crew flies for at least eight to ten hours a day, depending on their work schedules, and fear of flying is something that you just can’t let interfere with your performance at work, right?

Each one of us has their own fears and phobias, and it’s just inevitable. A good reason for having such a problem could be because you’ve had a traumatic experience years ago, or because you tend to imagine tragedies happening to you.

However, if you really want to start a career as a flight attendant, you need to get rid of that fear completely! Airlines will not adjust their standards for you because there are a lot of aspiring flight attendants waiting for an opportunity. You can’t let your fear stop you from making your dreams come true. 1. Acknowledge your fear

Admit to yourself that you are afraid to fly. Instead of repeatedly telling yourself that you don’t have fear of flying, simply tell yourself that it’s okay to be afraid and you just need to calm down. Usually, when fear attacks, you might experience things such as trembling hands, excessive sweating, or even having negative thoughts. Try not to fight the feeling, but rather, convince yourself that you need to face it properly so you can identify the root cause of your fear.

2. Learn about it

Once you’ve already pointed out the main cause of your fear, you can eliminate it by studying about it. Say, if your fear is caused by your worries of engine failure, try to be educated about it. You can research aircraft engines fail and how it is fixed. Having knowledge about aerodynamics can help you in the future!

3. Imagine yourself on a safe flight

Visualize yourself giving out meals to your passengers and checking out on everyone while at work. Imagine that after hours of traveling on air, you’ve landed and the passengers safely reached their destination. By doing so, you are calming your mind by indirectly telling it that there’s nothing to be afraid of and it’s absolutely safe. It will help when you’re on the real situation!

4. Stop entertaining the thought

Once you’ve started thinking about your fear, try to divert your attention to something else such as thinking about the places you’d like to go to when you’ve landed, and more. Never let your fear stop you from functioning. Sometimes, it’s just a matter of mind.

5. Seek professional help

When all else fails, then you need to refer to a psychotherapist to help you overcome your fear. Professionals can effectively help you as they will calm your mind by talking it out. You’ll realize you have nothing to be afraid of by the end of your sessions.


There’s nothing wrong with having fears because all of us do. However, what’s wrong is if we let that fear take over us and stop us from doing what we love. If you do have fear of flying, try to address the concern as early as possible so you won’t have any problems in the future.
